The Amino Acid for Sex?

L-arginine is an interesting amino acid in that it has been touted for years now as a precursor to HGH or Human Growth Hormone and as having aphrodisiac properties.

It is in fact a natural precursor to the natural form of human growth hormone. Problem is, you have to take a LOT of it to notice results and those results can often seem spurious at best.

The reason is simple. You have to take quite a bit of arginine for it to have an effect and there are many things that can block its entrance through the blood-brain barrier, including certain other amino acids.

To be effective, arginine must pass through the previously mentioned blood-brain barrier. If it is blocked or prevented from passing through this barrier, it simply loses its effectiveness.

Another down side is that in order to be effective; you must take amounts that have a tendency to give you a rather "fishy" body odor. Not very pleasant, and neither is the taste if taken in powder form.
There is one other thing that makes arginine impractical for some people. Arginine seems to cause people with the herpes simplex virus to have more frequent outbreaks of symptoms (sores and itching). For this reason, people with herpes are not encouraged to take arginine.

This is also why the amino acid lysine is effective in helping to prevent herpes outbreaks; it helps to block arginine from entering the aforementioned blood-brain barrier.

As a natural precursor to human growth hormone, arginine enjoys a certain reputation among everyone from dieters, to bodybuilders, to life extension enthusiasts and youth seekers. It is also touted as an aphrodisiac, although there is no clinical evidence that the author is aware of (and I have researched a fair amount).

One of the reasons that arginine still enjoys a reputation as an aphrodisiac is due partly to the fact that it also stimulates the production of nitrous oxide in the bloodstream. Nitrous oxide is important in achieving and maintaining erection for the man, because it causes the blood vessels in the penis to relax and allow blood to pour in, which causes erections.

It is also necessary in women to relax the blood vessels so that the genitalia will become engorged and sensitive.

Again, the amount of arginine necessary to achieve this is sometimes excessive and the amount of NO (nitrous oxide) produced that can actually be used by the penis or genitalia is often negligible. Enter citrulline.

L-citrulline is a more bio-available form of l-arginine and is thus much more effective. To read more about this amazing amino acid just visit www.ultimatesexsecrets.com
